Call for Papers: 2023 Midwest Art History Society Conference

The 2023 Midwest Art History Society Conference is calling for papers related to the session "Art Conservation: The Intersection of Science, Art and History". The 49th annual conference will be held March 30–April 1, 2023 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin along beautiful Lake Michigan.

Art conservation is an integral part of caring for and understanding collections; bringing new detail to light in a painting by removing a discolored varnish, reassembling an excavated Etruscan ceramic from a pile of sherds, mud and gauze, making a book's content accessible by resewing a binding, identifying the type of pigment used to make blue paint and so much more. How do these actions and the gleaned information affect an object's art historical interpretation? Have you been part of a conservation treatment or technical study that changed the way an object, its making practices or historical context was viewed?

Proposals should include no more than 200 words and a two-page CV. Presentations will be under 20 minutes in length and will be delivered in person.

Please submit papers to Stephanie Cashman at stephanie.cashman@mam.org by Friday, December 23, 2022.
Notifications of proposal status will be sent via email in mid-January 2023.

Graduate student travel grants are available to help offset expenses related to the conference.

Thank you,
