Historic Conservation Technician Job at the NY State Education Department

Historic Conservation Technician 2, Grade 12 (CSEA-Operational)

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is
seeking candidates for a Historic Conservation Technician 2 position in the New York
State Archives. The incumbent is this position will be responsible for working in the
Conservation Laboratory of the Cultural Education Center, assisting a conservator, and
performing conservation activities on paper documents and photographs. Under the
direction of an Archives Conservation Specialist 3, duties of this position include, but are
not limited to, the following:
• Assist with the evaluation and preparation of records requested for digitization,
preservation, transportation, and/or exhibition, through documentation, simple
mending, local or overall flattening, cleaning, and rehousing;
• Maintain an inventory of conservation and preservation supplies for use in the
Conservation Laboratory and in other areas of the Office of Cultural Education
and maintain supplies for use during disaster response;
• Participate in records retrievals and the safe transportation of collections from
storage to research or exhibition spaces, which may require lifting boxes of
collections or supplies of up to 40 pounds;
• Assist with the evaluation and treatment of damaged materials in the event of a
disaster;
• Participate in the Collection Response Team’s plan for and response to
situations that may place the collections in jeopardy, and assist in preparedness
training for staff;
• Participate in collections and holdings maintenance activities, including assisting
in building and collections surveys, monitoring and logging environmental
conditions in collections areas using hygrothermographs and dataloggers,
adjusting and calibrating recording equipment after appropriate training, and
recommending solutions to problems identified through monitoring;
• Assist with tours and presentations for staff and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c
service as a Historic Conservation Technician 2.
Provisional Appointment: In the absence of an eligible list with three or more candidates
willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered.
For provisional appointment, candidates must have three years of conservation or
preservation or historic collections-related experience in the discipline to which
assigned. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in history, public history, art history, museum
studies, photographic preservation, collections management, conservation, or fine arts
may be substituted for two years of experience. Provisional candidates must take the
examination for Historic Conservation Technician 2 when it is next offered, and must be
reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment.
55b/c Appointment: This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and is subject to
verification of applicant eligibility. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications
and a current 55b/c eligibility letter.


Conditions of Employment:
This will be a permanent appointment or a temporary provisional appointment.
Provisional candidates must take the examination for the Historic Conservation
Technician 2 when it is next offered and must be reachable on the resulting eligible list
to maintain employment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating
unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their
salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree will be required at the time
of interview for all candidates. The work schedule for this position includes hours of
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $54,140 based on annual performance advances.
