Textile Conservation at the Cleveland Museum of Art

Back in January the textile lab installed two kesas in the Japanese galleries. March textile rotations included the Coptic gallery and the Chinese gallery. Work then continued on preparing objects for textile rotations in the Native North American case and in the pre-Columbian gallery. Textile Conservator Robin Hanson’s big project has been preparing a large circular Rasht work tent for display. The tent dates from the second quarter of the 19^th century, and will go on display in Gallery 234 in mid-July. The museum will be making a new mount for the tent and altering the current configuration so that the mount (rather than the tent roof) supports the tent wall panels.http://www.clevelandart.org/events/exhibitions/muhammad-shahs-royal-persian-tentTextile Conservation  Mellon Fellow Leanne Tonkin gained experience working with costumes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and returned to the CMA labs in mid-April.
